About Us

SMB Records is an independent record label founded by Zach Bellas in Washington, DC in 2009. Their artists include Zach Bellas, Groundscore, and Obscure Monuments. SMB has sold music in over 90 countries with thousands of records sold and over a half a million streams worldwide.

Although the label would not be officially founded until December of 2009, the story truly begins back in April of 1999 when Bellas sent a cassette tape of his high school band’s first album to two record labels. One was Sony. The other was the gold standard for a DIY record label - Washington, DC’s own Dischord.

Sony did not write back, however, Dischord did. They were not eager to sign the band, but in a long paragraph on the back of a postcard that would forever change Bellas’ life, Melissa had suggested that he start his own recording label and put out music himself. Though it wouldn’t be another 10 years until SMB Records would issue their first release, the seed was planted.

Flash forward to 2020, SMB now has six full length releases from four different artists with thousands of records sold worldwide and hundreds of thousands of streams.

As for the future, much more of the same. A commitment to putting out simple, honest music and a ton of live shows.
